Religious History

  • Historically the Protestant Reformation has its roots in our country 100 years before Luther ( Jon Hus, 15th century)

  • In the 17th and 18th centuries a strong Counter-Reformation which is responsible for almost complete secularization of the country

  • today, more people believe in UFO's than in God (Christianity Today, October, 2005)

Realistic estimates of the Christians in the Czech Republic:

  • Practicing Catholics 5%

  • Practicing Protestants <1%

  • Evangelicals 0.15 %

  • Non-believers (atheists) 94%

Christian Community in Prague

  • Estimates suggest that approximately 1,800 people participate in Protestant Churches.

  • Approximately 3,000 attend Roman Catholic Churches.

  • The population of Prague is approximately 1,250,000.

  • Thus, church participation is approximately 0.004%
